3 easy steps to a VAT refund
As a foreign tourist, you are entitled to reclaim the VAT included in your purchases if you take the goods with you to your home country.
This “tax free service” is offered worldwide by numerous retailers. Please note that, as an inhabitant of the European Union, you cannot use the tax free service within the EU.
The rate of VAT in Germany amounts to 19% for most goods. In order to be able to make tax free purchases, you must spend at least €25 per transaction. You must also declare your goods to customs before departure (within three months plus the month of purchase). The amount of the refund is calculated based on the rate of VAT less a processing fee.
